Consider the following: the three aspects of Land, Store, and Accusation. How is Harlan Granger involved in these, and how are the Logan's involved. (Take special note of pages 163-164.)

  1. I thought Casey was really stupid in giving away his coat. T.J. Can be such a ijut.

It's a nice sentiment, the Logan's giving up their land as collateral, but the black people can barely pay their debts thanks to Granger. Here's hoping that it doesn't blow up in their face.

    1. Agreed! T.J. Is pretty dumb!

    2. I agree... And Mr. Granger wants to charge his people more for their crops next year just so he can make ends meet and if that happens then the colored people won't be able to pay their debts.

    3. Make ends meet? Granger could make ends meet with half the money he's getting now. He just wants to make the black people suffer and shop at his store instead.

    4. I agree that he should not have given his coat away. I just wouldn't call him dumb. T.J. Just needs to learn not everything is about him.

    5. I also agree with Morgan here, he was NOT smart in giving away his coat! Stacey is very smart just is minipulated by his friends too much!

    6. I definitely agree. Stacey let TJ get to him when really he actually was just jealous of Stacey's nice new coat.

  2. The Logan kids are not the brightest!
I was surprised that Big Ma actually gave some land away cause the land is important to them and all.

Papa seems like a scary man, being so strong and all. I'd never wanna get on his bad side.
Giving the land away is probably a bad idea, Mr. Granger isn't the nicest person, he's obviously up to no good!

    1. I disagree. I think the Logan kids are bright. They stand up for themselves and what is right. I believe that in itself that is intelligence

    5. I agree with Morgan as well. Except I also want to point out that the logan kids are not unintelligent but they are unaware and not informed with everything that is going on. Anywhere from the house to blacks vs. whites in general. It's not a fair assumption to say they are not the brightest.

    6. I agree with Erin and how the Logan children are unaware and also uninformed on what is happenings between the whites and the blacks

  3. The Logan's did not own that land before they owned it the Granger family used to own it. But the Yankee carpetbaggers stole it after the war. Since the Logan's are the only colored family with their own land white folks resent the land that they have and their independent attitude. The Logan's are also trying to get as meny families as they can to stop shopping at the Wallace's store. Since Harlan leases land to the Wallace's and gets a hefty percentage of its revenue if the Logan's get a lot of people to stop shopping there it won't be good for the Wallace's or Granger.

  4. The Logan's try their best, but sometimes i wonder whether they care too much about the other people. I think Big Ma going to the lawyer so that the land can't be sold without an agreement between both her sons was a good idea so it lowers the chance of her caving in to Granger's pressure. He fear them because he knows the Logans have the power to sway the opinions (and the people themselves) of the blacks. he says he'll have to raise the percentage he takes to make ends meet, but we know he would even if he did'nt considering how much he already takes from the sharecroppers. He just would punish them.

  5. I thought one of the most memorable things was around Christmas time, when Papa came home. The Logan family was so happy. They shared stories around the fire place, feasted on a lovely meal, and opened presents. I think this part of the chapter shows just how much the family cares for one another.

    1. I agree... I also liked how close they were...

    2. I completely agree! And to go with that, I feel like the love that was shared there was also in intended to be in uncle hammers heart when he heard about Cassie at the store, and Stacey's coat. Uncle hammer is not trying to be the bad guy. The though one who knows everything. I feel like we're looking past the love and compassion in his heart. The drive to keep his family safe and teach them valuable lessons. Instead most people read past it like he's aggressive and not very smart. Of course bringing yourself into something that could get you hurt isn't intelligent. But isn't that what family is? Risking your own happiness for someone else's?

    3. I agree! And I love how they involve mr Morrison in all of this like he is apart of the family!

  6. I'm going to be completely honest here! This chapter was confusing to me! But after reading everybody's comments I kind of gathered that Harkan Granger is trying to steal the land, so I'm going to comment on that. He shouldn't be stealing others land that doesn't belong to him if the Loans can afford it, it shouldn't matter.

  7. I think it's great how the family got together. They shared stories and some were sad and some were happy. It's great papa got to be home to share this with them. I think it's very shocking how Big Ma just gave up land. How much it was values by the family it just shocked me. I think this chapter was the most interesting to read!

  8. Well I guess it's time for my own comment. I don't know which angle to go from here so I'll just jump around. First of all I think the whole family had good intentions and want to do what they can to help out the situation but they are all on a different page. I don't think e kids are informed and aware about everything that is going on in there society and if they knew all about how whites and blacks are supposedly different then they would be a lot more safe and it might help in future dispute. On another note I have to agree with everyone else and say how the Logan family comes together is truly great and inspiring and it's a drive for me to continue to read the book.
At this point In the book the part that stood out the most and grabbed my attention was the chapter about the store and cassie. I didn't realize until then what the real situation was with Wallace and how rude he is.

    1. I agree. Why do their parents expect them to understand and listen to them if they don't explain why there is the lines between the races. They need to explain it to the children better.

    2. I also agree with this. I think that the children need to be in the know if what is going on. They deserve to know just as much as everyone else. It's not fair for them to be living in a world everyday and not be aware of what's actually going on. I do think that they should only be told at a certain age though. Small children should be able to live their life without any worries, where as older children/young adults should be told what's going on around them.

    3. I agree with Sam to. The parents should tell the kids the difference between the white race the black race and how they are so different.

    4. I love the Logan children, I think they represent hope. Each one of them truly cares about others and in my opinion understands happiness. (if that makes sense) I would hope they don't lose that about them as they continue to learn more about the world they live in.

  9. They are a very close family and dont do anything unless the whole family is with them like the big hole and the bus. They should inform there kids more so they dont get into trouble like at the store.

  10. I think the Logan's were right in wanting to help others stop shopping at the Wallace's store, and I also think that helping them is not worth taking the risk of losing their land over because they all know that Harland granger really wants to get the land back

  11. I thought this wash confusing chapter too, but all in all I think what the Logan's are doing to get people to stop shopping at the Wallace store is good but very very dangerous. They are brave people and I like how they involve the kids in their history.

    1. I agree with Kelsey that what the family is doing is very dangerous but very brave. I think the family needs to be careful, but I don't think they should stop what they're doing

  12. I think the Logan family is a very nice family and they are very close. They try to be nice to everyone and not disrespect the white people. The Logan children need to learn that they cant disrespect the white people because if they dont they could get their own family in trouble. I think the thing that most shocked me is when Mr.Simms grabbed Cassies arm just because she accidently bumped into Lillian. Then she apologized and when Mr.Simms came there he made Cassie apologize again.

    1. So are you saying that you think that the white people are better than the Logans? I understand that they should be afraid, but shouldn't they stand up for themselves?

    2. Are you saying that they should put themselves at risk? I understand that they want to help people, but shouldn't they make sure that they don't lose the only thing keeping them independent?

  13. I think the Logan's are a very intelligent family. The adults understand how life works, with the struggles between whites and blacks. Their understanding of everything they have and the power they hold is why Mr. Granger should fear the Logan's. They have the power to really hurt the Wallace family and Mr. Granger with the boycotts they are starting, and with their decisions about the land they own.
In the chapter we see how hope is lost. I say this because of the conversation between Stacie and Pa when they talk about Jeremy. Stacie talks about how Jeremy could be one of his best friends if he let him. Pa then says its fine to be friends with Jeremy but not to let him become to close. Pa says he is a white boy and therefore eventually will side with all the other white men and turn against Stacie. Blacks in the 1930s had no reason to trust white people, and so they didn't, this is why the barrier between the two was so hard to break and in someways still exists today.

  14. I believe that Harland hates the Logan's because he wants that land and because he is extremely raciest. He is so jealous of them and is extremely scared that blacks will take over and will start farming just as much as whites if not more. He doesn't want to be taken over by nigers.

  15. I think that the Logan's are taking a big risk in losing their land in trying to stop people from shopping at the Wallace's. The Logan's can over power the Wallace's, so they shouldn't be afraid to stand up to them.
